I think one of the reasons this was popular was because having people and prehistoric creatures in the same frame provides perspective. One of the things that I find frustrating about most mainstream documentaries on giant extinct creatures like Dinosaurs is you have zero perspective. It's a lot like looking at pictures of Sequoia national park without any pictures of people standing next to the ancient colossal trees. For that reason I just couldn't appreciate just how big or intimidating dinosaurs actually were until I went to the Natural History Museum in New York and stood next to a skeleton of a brontosaurs and only then did I get the sense of just how incredible these ancient animals were. By having someone like Nigel Marven superimposed on CGI created animals you can get the actual scale because everyone knows how large an average person is and so you can start to imagine what being next to a t rex or a brontosaurs or a megalodon would look and feel like. Honestly I wish more documentaries on extinct species would take this appreciate because seeing a t rex next to a triceratops just doesn't do it for me because both animals are not the far a part in terms of size so it doesn't really give you any perspective. After all when you think about it what's the main reason so many people find dinosaurs interesting? Because they're freakin enormous, and totally dwarf us.

In England its just called Walking with Beasts. Second point, using an ape costume for the 4th episode has its own problem. Non-human apes have different skull shapes and sizes which cannot easily be hidden as ours are the bigger skulls. Another commenter noted we see problems with computer generated humans or close to humans quicker so both approaches have a problem

I’m 40 years old and I still have my copy of The Last Dinosaur from when I was a kid. It was rather haunting and beautiful as well. Most of the dinosaur books I had when I was a kid I’ve lost over the years, but I still have some. I miss the vintage dinosaur books.

If they made the animals mouse sized, then they wouldn't have gotten into the situation they were in. Heck, they don't even needed to change the herbivores that much other than their size. As for the carnivores, they could probably change their diet into bugs.

As a gen alpha, I watched A dinosaur story, and I can’t believe that no kid will ever watch old toy movies again

For all its flaws, I love old art like no other. Outdated, sure, but mythical and majestic. And adding to that was before the idea of a meteor was proposed, the dinosaurs “just disappeared”, is simply existentially haunting. Sure there were ideas of volcanism and mammals and diseases, but it added up to “What happened to the dinosaurs? Nobody knows.”, left an impression like nothing else on me as a kid. Childhood cosmic horror. Anyway, love this video, man.

Planet Dinosaur is without a shadow of a doubt the best Dinosaur documentary put together, and I include the recent Prehistoric planet. Its wonderful on the eye, excellent narrated by John Hurt , and I actually felt I was learning when I was watching it, as opposed to see a showcase of movies. I wish all dino shows would attopt this style. Its an Outstanding show.

That is sort of Bullshit in my biased opinion i’m not accusing you of cherry picking however it kind of comes off that way Considering a new Giants the main focus was how the Titanosaurus got so massive and showed their adaptations for feeding and the only thing that was memorably disturbing was the part where those small dinosaurs drowned in the quicksand caused by the footprints created (unwittingly and casually) by a migrating herd
